Cleaning Baby Poop And Urine Off Of Your Upholstered Sofa

Changing tables are a great concept, but many parents quickly fall out of the habit of taking the baby all the way to their room to utilize the changing table and all of its conveniences. Instead, the baby is carefully laid on the sofa, the dirty diaper removed, and the wiping begins. Unfortunately, this doesn't always go well—the mess in the diaper has found it's way onto the sofa. So, how do you remove baby poop and urine from upholstered furniture? Here, you'll find a few tips that will help.

Stop the Spread

As you work to clean up the mess, it's pretty easy to spread the mess instead. To prevent the spread of the mess, get a Styrofoam plate and cut a hole slightly larger than the stain in the center of it. Use masking tape to secure it around the spot. As you work to remove the stain, the plate will prevent the cloth that you're using from spreading the spot as you blot.

Urine Removal

To remove urine from upholstered furniture, you'll need a few things:

  • White vinegar
  • Warm water
  • Wet-dry vacuum
  • Lots of high-quality paper towels or white cloths (Don't use colored cloths—the colors can bleed onto the upholstery.)

Once you have gathered your supplies, here are your next steps:

  1. Begin by blotting the area very well, pressing firmly into the padding under the upholstery.
  2. Once you've dried as much of the urine out of the upholstery as possible, mix equal parts of warm water with white vinegar.
  3. Dab the paper towels into the mixture and begin blotting the surface of the upholstery; this will help to eliminate the odors that the urine leaves behind.
  4. Continue working with the white vinegar and water until you no longer smell the urine.
  5. Use clean warm water to rinse the area by blotting.
  6. Dry the area using the wet-dry vacuum.
  7. Position a fan to expedite the drying process.

Poop Removal

To remove the sloppier messes from the upholstery, you'll need:

  • Plastic spoon
  • Paper towels
  • White vinegar
  • Warm water

To clean the poop off of the upholstery, you'll use pretty much the same technique as cleaning the urine. The only difference is, you'll begin the cleaning process with a plastic spoon. Use the spoon to carefully scrape as much of the poop off of the upholstery as possible. Then, continue with the same steps that you've followed for urine cleanup.

Every so often, you should have an upholstery cleaning professional come to your home to perform a deep clean on your furniture. These steps will keep your sofa looking good between professional cleanings.
