Do Your Vinyl Floors Have Pet Urine Stains? Learn How You Can Remove Them

Your vinyl flooring may be affordable and very easy to take care of, but it can still become damaged. If you have pets in your home, chances are that they will have an accident on the floor at some point. If you don't catch it in time, you will wind up with a stain on the floor. Here is how you can clean up the stain and odor from pet urine.

Tools and Materials

Before you can begin cleaning your floors, you will need to gather these items, many of which are already in your home.

  • Paper towel
  • White vinegar
  • Dishwashing soap
  • Baking soda
  • Towels
  • Mop
  • Vacuum
  • Bucket

1. Absorb The Moisture

Use the paper towel to soak up as much moisture from your flooring as possible. Lay paper towel over the stain, and replace it as necessary until it is no longer absorbing moisture. It helps to lay a heavy object on the paper towel, like a book, so that the paper towel is making complete contact with the floor.

2. Create A Simple Cleaning Solution

Mix together the following ingredients inside a bucket with hot water:

  • Liquid dishwashing soap – 4 tbsp.
  • White vinegar – ½ cup

The mixture won't just clean off the urine that is on your floor, but will help remove any odor that has absorbed into your vinyl flooring's surface.

3. Clean Your Vinyl Flooring Surface

Use your mop and towels to clean your flooring with the cleaning mixture. If the urine is in corner that is difficult to clean with a mop, you will need to scrub the area by hand. It is the best way to get into the small nooks that the pet's urine flowed into.

4. Rinse and Dry Your Floor

Rinse out your cleaning bucket, and then fill it up with hot water. Rinse off your floor with a clean rag or mop to get rid of any of the cleaning residue that is on the vinyl flooring. Use a towel to dry off the floor, and use a fan to circulate air in the area to help dry hard to reach places.

5. Absorb The Odor

Sprinkle some baking soda over the area, and let it sit overnight. It will help fully absorb any remaining odor, and you can remove the baking soda with a vacuum cleaner.
